The European Union Technical Partner
The University of Copenhagen as the technical partner will bring the experience of setting up and managing the mobility programmes in Europe to provide technical support to the African HEIs in the implementation of the project. Specifically, the technical partner will advise on:
- An effective way of managing the mobility in terms of organization, implementing and monitoring ;
- How the cooperation can be operationalized to contribute to modernization and internationalization of African higher education;
- EU regulations on fund management. It will also participate in promoting the mobility programme outside the African continent and support African HEIs collaboratively to mobilize resources for the sustainability of the programme.
The associated partners
The associate partners, the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) located in Uganda will provide internship and mentorship to students on enterprise development. The Beninese Agency of Food Safety located in Benin will provide internships to students on food safety management which is key for the success of the agri-food business. International Food Policy Research Institute with centres in project regions will provide internships and mentor students on policies related to agribusiness and food systems in Africa. Attachment of students to these associate partner institutions will enable students to blend the technical and theoretical knowledge gained from the universities with practical realities in the field
Gulu University is a community-oriented, public university, located in Gulu City, Northern Uganda. Gulu University has unique master's programs that integrate community engagement and entrepreneurship in graduate training. The TASFA project, Gulu University offers two master's programs i.e. Masters of Science in Agrientreprise development(MAE) and Masters of Science in Food security and community nutrition(MFN). Additionally, Gulu University will offer Ph.D. scholarships in Applied Biosciences.
In the consortium, Gulu university is responsible for handling the cross-cutting issues of community engagement, enterprise development, and soft skills development for participation scholars and fellows.
Makerere University Kampala (MUK), the oldest university in Africa with a history spanning over 100 years, is a renowned public institution in Uganda's vibrant capital, Kampala. Founded in 1922, Makerere University has a rich history of academic excellence and has produced graduates in a variety of disciplines, contributing to its reputation as one of the continent's leading educational institution. With over 300,000 alumni, Makerere has produced influential professionals who have made significant contributions worldwide in fields such as health, agriculture, engineering and the arts. This enduring institution plays a central role in higher education and research and maintains its status as a beacon of knowledge and innovation in Africa.
Under the TASFA project, Makerere University offers three major academic programs: a Masters in Applied Human Nutrition, a Masters in Agribusiness Management and a Ph.D. in agriculture and applied economics. These programs are designed to promote expertise in critical areas that contribute to sustainable development and food security. Additionally, Makerere will offer credit-seeking programs in research methodology under TASFA through the Department of Agribusiness and Natural Resource Economics to further enhance the academic rigor and research skills of participating students. Makerere University strives to create a supportive environment. Makerere will provide comprehensive support for students and staff, ensuring smooth integration through accommodation, language orientation and cultural acclimatization.
Eduardo Mondlane University
The Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) is a nationwide public institution, the oldest higher education institution in Mozambique, founded in 1962. The main campus is located in the capital city, Maputo, in the south of the country. This university offers seventy-one courses at undergraduate level and sixty-one (61) courses at postgraduate level. Since 1968, UEM has graduated over 34,000 students who now make up the UEM Alumni Community. The Faculty of Agronomy and Forestry Engineering is one of eleven Faculties of UEM, and this faculty was created with the aim of training high-quality senior technicians in agronomic and forestry sciences.
The Eduardo Mondlane University plays a leading role for the TAFSA mobility project which is a consorcia of five African Universities (Eduardo Mondlane University, Gulu University, Makerere University, University of Abomey Calavi, and University of Pretoria. The UEM through the Faculty of Agronomy and Forestry Engineering offers a Masters course in Agricultural Economics and a PhD in Management and Agri-Food Policies. The main tasks for the UEM, as the leading institution of the TAFSA project, will include overseeing the Management (administrative and financial), Cooperation, overall coordination of the project with the partner institutions, and reporting to the intra-Africa mobility secretariat. Also, it is the UEM responsibility to coordinate meetings with the partner institutions, receiving, consolidating and sharing overall project reports. In addition, the UEM, along with partner institutions, will recruit and select candidate students moving to Mozambique for their studies under the mobility project, and for these students the UEM will provide support and supervision. The UEM through this consorcia will contribute to the development of visibility of project materials, development of an effective framework for harmonization and recognition of studies, sustainability and visibility of project activities (development strategies, conducting visibility activities including writing joint proposals, establishment of alumni chapter for fundraising, etc).
The University of Pretoria (UP) is a seven-campus public university with its largest campus in the heart of Hatfield, the picturesque diplomatic hub of South Africa’s capital city. The University has 267,000 Alumni and offers 1357 study programmes in nine faculties. The UP is considered one of the world’s top universities and occupies a space in the top 1,9% of universities in the world. The university rank highly within African universities across several ranking measurement systems. In this context the Gordon Institute of Business Sciences (Gibbs) rank 52nd in by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Executive MBA Ranking 2021.
In the TASFA project, the University of Pretoria will offer four Master's and five PhD bursaries in Consumer Science and Entrepreneurship. Other options may be considered that can include other disciplines in Food Systems. The University will coordinate with other partners to produce visibility materials such as flyers, brochures, pull-ups, and blogs for dissemination in on various platforms. The UP will host students and staff, provide support for integration in their country, in terms of accommodation, language orientation and cultural integration.
The University of Abomey-Calavi is a Beninese public university located in the municipality of Abomey-Calavi, near Cotonou, in the South of the country. Currently, the University of Abomey-Calavi has 29 training entities. It is a multi-disciplinary institution, which provides training leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as certificates and diplomas, Bachelor degrees, Master degree, Doctorate degree in various disciplines such as health, agricultural sciences, arts and humanities, law, economics and business etc.
In the TASFA project, University of Abomey Calavi offers two Master's programmes: Master programme in Food Sciences and Technologies and Interfaculty Master of Food Standards and Quality Control of Agricultural Products. In the consortium, University of Abomey-Calavi will be the leader for project visibility and sustainability. It will coordinate with other partners to produce visibility materials such as flyers, brochures, pull-ups, and blogs for dissemination in various fora. UAC will host students and staff, provides support for integration in their country, in terms of accommodation, language orientation and cultural integration.
